US 1 ADA, Sidewalk, and Safety Improvements:

SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company,  has provided design services for the US 1 project that included:

 

  • Roadway and Streetscape Design

 

  • Evaluated existing ramps, upgrade to meet SHA ADA design standards and provide ramp details
  • Evaluated existing sidewalks, curb and gutter, medians and driveways (where the curb crosses a pedestrian path) and recommended replacement
  • Evaluated existing inlets and recommended improvements if they are structurally damaged
  • Replaced concrete cross walks at intersections with HMA cross walks
  • Developed quantities and cost estimate
  • Provided design support during construction
  • Upgraded pedestrian ramps, sidewalks, and driveways
  • Installation of detectable warning surfaces
  • Design of intersection islands to meet the latest ADA design guidelines, MDSHA design criteria, “SHA Accessibility Policy & Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities along State Highways dated December 2005” and “Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG).”

SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, also investigated the existing fire hydrants and utility poles within sidewalks that are in conflict with the aforementioned design guidelines. In cases of design conflicts, SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, proposed alternatives, such as providing bump-outs to avoid relocating fire hydrants and utility poles. Such recommendations were summarized by preparing ADA waiver applications that were submitted to MDSHA for review and approval. SAI, a Mead & Hunt Company, was also responsible for:

 

  • Roadway construction bid documents for milling and resurfacing
  • Upgrading and investigating existing storm drain pipes,
    inlets and manholes, and MOT design
  • Preparing erosion and sediment control plans, and SWM management, design and analysis.
